How To Use Your Slow Cooker to Eat Healthier (Plus a Slow Cooker Meal Plan)

It's no secret we are huge fans of the classic slow cooker. It makes our lives so much easier when it comes to eating healthy!

Whether you are looking to lose weight, have more energy, save money or just feel better about the food you are putting in your body – a slow cooker can help.

If you don't quite get the whole slow cooker craze, we're here to break it down for you. These are just a few ways our slow cooker simplifies our lives and makes it easy to create nourishing meals in minutes. Be sure to keep reading til' the end to get the scoop on our Easy Peasy Slow Cooker meal plan!

1. It helps cut back on the amount of oil we use

When you cook things in the oven or on the stovetop, you tend to need more oil as the environment dries things out. The slow cooker creates a moist environment, which means you can cut way back on oil!

2. It helps us prepare in advance and stay on track

After an exhausting day at work, you arrive home to unlock your door and suddenly, a sweet aroma jolts you into a state of bliss. You remember that you threw Honey Garlic Chicken into the slow cooker this morning. Yessssss!

Having a delicious dinner ready for you when you walk in the door is a serious game-changer and the best way to stick to healthy habits.

3. It saves a ton of time

After a long day of meetings, the last thing you feel like doing is chopping vegetables, waiting for the oven to preheat and the dish to cook only to spend another 20 minutes cleaning up.

Instead, throw a meal into the slow cooker before you leave in the morning. Use that extra hour you would have spent prepping, chopping and cleaning up to go to the gym or wind down with a good book.

4. It saves money

There is absolutely no doubt you get more bang for your buck with slow cooker recipes.

For example, check out our Curried Chicken Crock Pot Stew. This recipe is affordable and ridiculously delicious. It uses just 2 chicken breasts but stretches them into 6 servings. Pack the leftovers for lunch instead of eating out to save even more money.

5. It keeps healthy options readily available

Remember a few weeks ago when we talked about dump dinners? We prepared 6 meals in just 1 hour and it was pretty epic.

A dump dinner is a slow cooker recipe you've prepared ahead of time and stored in the fridge or freezer. Combine all ingredients in a large ziplock bag and label it with instructions. Then when you need it the most, just dump it into the slow cooker and wait for it to cook!

6. It makes getting enough protein a lot easier

The thing I love most about slow cookers is how you can throw in any type of meat and it comes out perfect every time. You really can't go wrong. For as little as $13 you can buy an entire chicken, rub it with some spices, throw it in your slow cooker and have meals for days.

7. It helps us eat more vegetables

One of the common gripes against slow cookers is that they aren't great for vegetables. They often come out limp and soggy. There are a couple ways around this.

The first is to use the slow cooker for the protein portion of the meal and serve your vegetables on the side. For example, our Slow Cooker Chicken Shawarma cooks the chicken to perfection in the slow cooker, and then is served with a ton of fresh vegetables on the side.

The second is to wait until the end to stir in your vegetables. Before you are ready to eat, remove the lid of your slow cooker and stir in your vegetables until they are softened.

8. Cut Back on Clean Up

Throwing everything into one pot means that you aren't using multiple dishes to prepare the meal. Less dishes to clean means more time to focus on the important things like family and friends (and Netflix).
