Public speaking can be an incredible way to grow your nutrition business. It builds relationships, trust, awareness and gets you in front of potential clients.
Sounds great, right? It is, but not many nutrition professionals are taking advantage of this incredible growth opportunity, simply because the fear of public speaking stops them in their tracks.
It's normal to be completely terrified of public speaking. But trust us when we say that magical things happen when you step outside of your comfort zone. Many nutrition professionals just like you have managed to overcome their fear of public speaking to grow their businesses. We're determined to help you do the same, which is why we turned to the creator of Wellness COntent Co, Hayley Stathis who has successfully managed to put her fear behind her so she can market her business with public speaking like the rockstar nutrition professional she is.
Hayley is a Naturopath who works three days a week seeing clients in a natural health center in Newcastle, Australia. While she loves seeing clients, she also loves marketing. Hayley has invested tens of thousands of dollars over the years to learn online marketing and practice building strategies from the top marketing professionals because she realized very early on in her business that being visible is vital to growing a nutrition business.
Did you hear that? Being visible is vital to growing a nutrition business.
It's time to stop hiding, and we're here to help. Today, Hayley is sharing the four key steps you need to take in order to overcome your fear and start using public speaking to get in front of your ideal clients.
Step 1: Start
Don't wait to start public speaking until you feel ready because you never will. Stop thinking about it and start now.
Public speaking is a lot like jumping into the ocean. It’s better to just run and dive in. Otherwise, you'll just stand there in hesitation, over-analyzing how it's going to feel and coming up with a hundred reasons to stay on shore.
“So often we miss out on success because we’re wasting time getting things ‘perfect’, but then we don’t actually move forward with things.”
Getting caught up in the quest for perfection will leave you feeling exhausted and likely more scared than before you started. So let it go. Don't aim for perfection. Aim for progress. Make a goal to use public speaking as a growth strategy for your nutrition business.
Start by speaking out loud to yourself. It will feel weird at the start but will help you get confident with your voice. From here, start speaking to your friends and family online through things like Facebook or Instagram stories. These can be recorded privately in advance as many times as you like, which is great for practice.
Once you've become comfortable with talking to your phone or computer - you will feel more confident to get in front of an audience. It's all about taking small steps and putting one foot in front of the other. Start now.
Step 2: Get Clear on Your Niche Market
When you are passionate about your niche and have chosen an area of expertise, public speaking becomes a whole lot easier because you know what you are talking about. When you are speaking about something you understand and care about deeply - it shows and builds a deep-level of trust with your audience.
"Public speaking instantly positions you as an expert and the more you share what you know, even just on one topic, the more people begin to see you as a trusted adviser."
If you are worried that choosing a niche will cause you to miss out on potential clients who don't fit the bill, Hayley assures you that this is not the case:
"You don't need to worry about whether having a niche will make you lose business - it actually has the opposite effect!”
Step 3: Create a Signature Talk
Having a signature talk is the key to stripping away nervousness and settling into your own voice.
“Once you have created your signature talk, there is no limit to where, when and how often you run it. If someone asks you to come and present to their workplace, their community group or their school, you’re ready to roll.”
Your signature talk should be on a topic that comes naturally to you and is related to your niche market. The topic should be one you feel so passionate about that you have spent hours researching and learning about it just for fun.
Think about topics related to your niche that you love to chat about, just in casual conversation with friends and family. This is exactly what your signature talk should be about! When you are confident and passionate about a topic, it will help overcome the fear of speaking about it. It will also make creating the talk a lot less work.

Step 4: Create Visual Cues
So, you’ve chosen a topic you love and crafted the content. Now it is time to create resources that will help you stay organized when you are in front of a large audience.
“Using slides like those made in Powerpoint can be a huge help. All the workshops I run have powerpoint slides – because they help me feel organized and I don’t have to worry about what to say next! Audiences tend to like slides too. You could use flash cards or notes – whatever makes you feel most comfortable.”
Visual reminders naturally reduce fear as you don't have to rely on memory alone. They are also highly effective in creating a memorable presentation for your audience.
Now you've made a commitment to start using public speaking as a growth strategy for your business. You've focused in on your niche market, are confident in your area of expertise, crafted a signature talk and your supportive visual cues are ready to rock.
Still nervous? If so, that is perfectly normal but do not let the fear of failure stop you from making a difference in people's lives.
“If you let nerves get the better of you, there could be someone who desperately needs your help who misses out. I think that's a good motivator to step up and give it a go!”
We've seen hundreds of nutrition professionals step outside of their comfort zones and leverage the power of public speaking to grow their businesses. There is no reason you can't do the same. You've got this, so go get started now.
